Sanz Lovatón Emerges as the PRM’s Main Reserve for 2028

Nueva York: Eduardo Sanz Lovatón has been a prominent leader of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and has held key positions in public administration, particularly as the director of the General Directorate of Customs (DGA). In this role, he implemented reforms that modernized and streamlined processes, improving tax collection and the fight against smuggling. These reforms benefited the Dominican Republic’s economy, increased transparency, and reduced administrative corruption.

Thanks to the actions taken, an average collection of 94.46 percent was achieved during 2020-2023. The General Directorate of Customs (DGA) collected RD$19,955,477,883 million from 2020-2023, compared to RD$10,262,173,281 million during the previous management from 2016-2019.

His focus on digitalization and strengthening customs controls has enhanced the country’s competitiveness in international trade. This has been well received by the economic sectors and voters who prioritize efficiency and transparency in public administration.

Although Sanz Lovatón has not announced his intention to run for president in 2028, he is emerging as one of the leading PRM candidates. Since the party came to power in 2020, he has built a strong profile, making him one of the most prominent figures in the upcoming elections. As the ruling party, the PRM will need a candidate capable of consolidating and expanding its support base. Sanz Lovatón meets this requirement due to his positive public image and strong relationships with various economic and political sectors.

Sanz Lovatón’s popularity extends beyond his work in Customs and has allowed him to build a national political profile. His ability to connect with voters outside his close circle is key to a presidential candidacy. Additionally, within the PRM, he enjoys the backing of the party’s internal structures and key leaders, making him a candidate with little chance of internal rejection. This positions him as a strong contender for the presidential nomination.

Despite maintaining a low profile, Sanz Lovatón has proven to be one of the best alliance builders within the PRM, as evident in the 2020 and 2024 elections. His ability to manage alliances and unite different sectors within the party allows him to aspire to a successful pre-candidacy.

In an electoral scenario, it would be easy for him to gain consensus among the upper echelons of the PRM, including President Luis Abinader, which would strengthen his position as a potential candidate to secure a third consecutive term for the PRM.

For 2028, the PRM must renew its image of change and continue with its government proposals. In this context, Sanz Lovatón emerges as a leader capable of representing both the continuity of the current government’s policies and the renewal of the reforms initiated by Abinader. His management of Customs is a clear example of his administrative efficiency, positioning him as an ideal candidate to continue the current government’s policies while deepening the reforms necessary for the country’s future.
