{"id":10552,"date":"2026-09-10T15:23:35","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T15:23:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elfarolatino.com\/?p=10552"},"modified":"2026-09-10T16:49:47","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T16:49:47","slug":"two-dominicans-sentenced-for-laundering-money-from-scams-targeting-older-adults","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elfarolatino.com\/en\/two-dominicans-sentenced-for-laundering-money-from-scams-targeting-older-adults\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Dominicans Sentenced for Laundering Money from Scams Targeting Older Adults"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PENNSYLVANIA.- Two citizens of the <a data-efl-existing-link=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/elfarolatino.com\/en\/1205\/\">Dominican Republic<\/a> were each sentenced to two years in prison for taking part in a money-laundering conspiracy connected to scams targeting older adults in the United States.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal Judge Nora Barry Fischer sentenced Luis Alfonso Bison\u00f3 Rodr\u00edguez, 35, and Engels Guillermo Almengot Valerio, 26. Both must also serve three years of supervised release after their respective prison terms.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. authorities said Rodr\u00edguez lived in Cleveland, Ohio, while Valerio lived in Paterson, New Jersey. Authorities indicated that both men were in the <a data-efl-existing-link=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/elfarolatino.com\/en\/measles-cases-rise-across-the-united-states\/\">United States<\/a> illegally.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Court documents say the defendants participated in a conspiracy to launder money from the so-called grandparent scam, a scheme that authorities said was operated from the Dominican Republic.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The method involved contacting older people and convincing them that a grandchild or another close relative was facing an emergency and urgently needed money.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the case file, members of the network coordinated with rideshare drivers to collect cash from victims\u2019 homes and later deliver it to other participants in the scheme.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities say Rodr\u00edguez and Valerio directly received money from those deliveries. Some of the funds were deposited into bank accounts, while other amounts were sent through transfers to the Dominican Republic.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Valerio\u2019s case, authorities said he also coordinated some of the trips used to collect the cash. Several of those trips ended with funds being delivered to Rodr\u00edguez, according to information presented in court.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brendan T. Conway.
