NEW YORK \u2014 The Dominican community has become the largest Latino-origin group in the New York metropolitan area, reaching 1,216,258 people in 2024, according to a study by the Center for Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center.<\/p>

The research, by Laird W. Bergad using U.S. Census Bureau data, found that the Dominican population stood at 544,795 in 2000. During the period studied, Dominicans surpassed Puerto Ricans across the region.<\/p>

The growth has also been accompanied by a broader presence beyond the city\u2019s five boroughs. In 2000, 75% of Dominicans in the metropolitan area lived within New York City<\/a>; by 2024, that share had fallen to 56%. One of the most notable changes occurred in the northern suburbs, where the Dominican population quadrupled.<\/p>
