Toronto has written a new chapter in the history of its Dominican community. At Caledonia Park, a baseball field became far more than a place for athletic competition. It was transformed into a lasting symbol of identity, memory, and recognition. With the official inauguration of the Santo Domingo Baseball Diamond, the city honored generations of Dominicans whose passion for baseball has gone hand in hand with their contributions to Canada’s sporting, cultural, and social development.

The ceremony brought together municipal officials, diplomatic representatives, community leaders, sports organizations, and dozens of Dominican families who shared a moment filled with pride and meaning. The atmosphere reflected the joy of a community witnessing a piece of its history become permanently woven into one of Toronto’s public spaces.

Mayor Olivia Chow led the ceremony alongside former Mayor John Tory and Deputy Mayor and Ward 8 Councillor Mike Colle. Representing the Dominican Republic was Consul General Lucilo A. Santos, accompanied by his team of vice consuls, consular staff, and administrative personnel. Also in attendance were Dominican Congresswoman Kenia Bidó, Presidential Advisor on Agricultural Affairs and former Dominican Consul General in New York Eligio Jáquez, José Torres “Bigote,” and other prominent members of Toronto’s Dominican community.

Among those gathered, there was a shared sense that the occasion reached far beyond the dedication of a baseball field. The site had come to represent decades of perseverance by thousands of Dominicans who made Toronto their home without ever leaving behind their heritage, their culture, or the passion for baseball that has long united the Dominican Republic.

That sentiment was echoed in a message shared by Eligio Jáquez on his X account, where he described the ceremony as Canada’s tribute to the Dominican people’s enduring love for baseball.

“Together with Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, our Consul Lucilo Santos, Congresswoman Kenia Bidó, and several political and sports leaders from both Canada and the Dominican Republic, the ‘Santo Domingo Baseball Stadium’ was officially inaugurated as Canada’s tribute to the Dominican passion for baseball,” he wrote.
