The Zero Hour Has Arrived for the Presidential Election and a Death Struggle for Control of Congress

New York: On November 5, 2024, elections of great importance for the political system of the United States will take place, renewing the entire House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate. The American people face a precarious margin when deciding between two candidates, the “lesser of two evils.” Fortunately, both have very different visions and approaches to various issues that will significantly impact citizens’ lives.

Economy

Kamala Harris advocates for a progressive approach, focusing on economic justice, increasing the minimum wage, expanding access to healthcare, and promoting affordable education. She proposes higher taxes for the wealthy to fund social programs. In contrast, Donald Trump promotes more conservative economic policies, emphasizing tax cuts and deregulation to stimulate economic growth, focusing on benefiting businesses to boost employment.

Health

Harris supports expanding access to healthcare, endorsing universal coverage and affordable health services, and frequently promotes the idea of “Medicare for All.” Conversely, Trump has sought to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and proposes a system that favors the private market with less government intervention.

Climate Change

Harris views climate change as an urgent crisis and supports policies to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energies, including a “Green New Deal” to address these issues. Trump has downplayed the importance of climate change, favoring the expansion of the fossil fuel industry and withdrawing the U.S. from international agreements like the Paris Accord.

Immigration

Harris promotes comprehensive immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and a more humanitarian policy towards immigrants. Trump takes a stricter stance, focusing on building a wall at the border and implementing restrictive immigration policies.

Civil Rights and Social Justice

Harris focuses on racial equity, police reform, and LGBTQ+ rights, supporting policies addressing social and economic disparities. Trump has been criticized for his policies and rhetoric on race, civil rights, and the LGBTQ+ community, often taking a more conservative stance on these issues.

These differences reflect their policies and visions of the role of government in citizens’ lives and the direction the country should take.

469 Seats at Stake in Congress

The same issues that polarized the presidential election have become a real battleground in the congressional elections. All 435 members of the House of Representatives are at stake, along with one-third of the Senate (34 senators) and some gubernatorial and state elections to renew local congresses.

There are concerns that the polarized presidential proposals on the economy, health, climate change, immigration, civil rights, and the LGBTQ+ community will carry over and lead to significant losses in many seats, resulting in the departure of numerous legislators from Congress on Tuesday.

The outcome of the elections will shape the country’s future and determine whether the new White House has allies or skeptics in the Capitol. It may also face a divided Congress, as in the last session when the Republican Party held a narrow majority in the House of Representatives while the Senate was under Democratic control.
