The aircraft, a Boeing 767-300, was unable to stop within the runway and ended up in an area near the airport. The causes that led the plane to overrun the runway had not been determined.
Miami-Dade authorities reported that five people died and five others were injured. Three of those injured were in critical condition.
During the initial response, emergency crews had to rescue people trapped inside vehicles. The aircraft’s two pilots were also rescued.
More than 60 emergency units and approximately 200 responders were mobilized to fight the fire, assist those affected and control a fuel leak caused by the crash.
The accident produced a large column of smoke and temporarily suspended operations at Miami International Airport. Several runways later reopened, although hundreds of delays and numerous cancellations were reported.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board began the corresponding investigations. The NTSB investigation seeks to determine the circumstances that caused the Boeing 767-300 to overrun the runway.
Amazon expressed condolences to the affected families and said it is working with authorities to clarify what happened. Flight 7598 was operated by 21 Air on behalf of Amazon Prime Air.
The aircraft had been in service for about 32 years and was converted from a passenger plane into a cargo aircraft in 2015, according to available information about the plane.
