PRM Backs Down After Internal Crisis Over Attempt to Extend Party Leadership Terms

Santo Domingo. The Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) faced a major internal crisis after its Executive Directorate proposed extending the terms of its current national and territorial leadership, a move that triggered immediate backlash from party leaders demanding respect for internal democracy and the organization’s governing statutes.

The original proposal sought to extend the national leadership headed by José Ignacio Paliza and Carolina Mejía for one additional year, while territorial and sectoral structures would remain in place for up to two more years. Party leadership defended the initiative by arguing that the country is going through a period that requires political stability, full concentration on governing responsibilities, and avoiding internal distractions ahead of the 2028 electoral cycle.

However, the reaction within the ruling party was immediate. Factions within the PRM questioned both the legality and legitimacy of postponing the ordinary convention scheduled to renew internal leadership. Critics argued that the measure could be interpreted as an attempt to prematurely shut down democratic debate within the country’s leading political organization.

Under mounting internal pressure, the Executive Directorate reversed course and announced it would not move forward with the extension, framing the decision as a reaffirmation of the PRM’s institutional commitment to its statutes and to internal democratic principles.

The episode exposed internal tensions within a party that, despite controlling the executive branch and maintaining political dominance, is beginning to show early signs of a leadership struggle ahead of 2028.
