Santo Domingo. The crisis triggered by the failed proposal to extend internal leadership terms within the Modern Revolutionary Party has revealed a political reality that many had so far avoided acknowledging: the battle for control of the ruling party has already begun.

Although the party leadership argued that the priority should be governmental stability rather than internal political matters, the resistance the proposal encountered demonstrated that broad sectors within the PRM are not willing to postpone competition for positions of influence.

The internal convention represents far more than a routine administrative renewal. In a governing party, control of the organizational structure means influence over candidacies, territorial strategies, alliances, and political positioning ahead of the presidential succession.

José Ignacio Paliza, as party president, and Carolina Mejía, as secretary general, have maintained institutional cohesion, but the approaching electoral cycle is intensifying tensions among internal factions, potential contenders, and territorial groups.

The failed attempt to extend the mandates ultimately became an early test of political strength. What happened shows that there is a significant base within the PRM demanding participation and unwilling to accept major decisions without broad internal debate.

The 2028 contest, while not officially underway, is already showing its first fractures.
