MADRID, Spain.— Communicators and community leaders in the Dominican diaspora in Europe asked President Luis Abinader to evaluate the performance of officials assigned to the continent and consider changes among those who, they said, have held their posts for a long time without producing visible results for the community.

The requests were made during an exchange on Tropical FM Madrid, where participants discussed the work of Dominican officials in Europe and their relationship with residents in different countries across the continent.

Norberto Azor, a Dominican communicator and community leader in Madrid, said it was necessary to determine what work government representatives are doing and whether they are meeting the responsibilities for which they were appointed. “There are officials who have been there for quite some time, and you do not see the action or the results,” he said while addressing the president.

Azor argued that authorities should review the performance of their representatives abroad and learn the results of their efforts. He also called for Dominicans living outside the country not to be considered only during electoral processes.

Marcelino Peralta, a communicator and social leader, supported the request and asked that positions connected to Dominicans living in Europe be held by people tied to those communities and familiar with their needs.

From Paris, communicator Alexander Bellance acknowledged progress in professionalizing the foreign service but questioned the relationship some officials maintain with community leaders. In his view, certain initiatives are developed without enough consultation to identify residents’ needs.

Journalist Olga Capellán, who lives in Barcelona, focused part of her criticism on INDEX in Europe. Although she highlighted the economic importance of Dominicans living on the continent through remittances to the Dominican Republic, she considered the support received by community organizations insufficient.

Capellán said she sees activities by the Institute of Dominicans and Dominicans Abroad in the United States, while in Europe, in her assessment, some of its actions are limited to virtual meetings and there is little support for Dominican organizations in Spain.

The journalist also said Foreign Minister Víctor Bisonó should pay attention to the performance of INDEX officials. She likewise questioned the institution’s ability to respond to situations involving Dominicans living abroad.

The participants agreed in calling for an evaluation of the results achieved by government representatives and a stronger institutional connection with the Dominican diaspora living in Europe.
