The event will be held on September 11, 12 and 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the Armory Arena, located at 216 Fort Washington Avenue, at the corner of 168th Street, near NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
More than 25 construction and real estate companies from the Dominican Republic will participate, presenting projects located in different parts of the country. Attendees will be able to learn about real estate options at different stages of development and receive information about the property-purchase process.
The offerings will include completed homes, projects under construction and properties sold from blueprints, allowing each person to evaluate alternatives according to their needs, budget and future plans. Represented locations include Punta Cana, Santiago, Baní, San Cristóbal, Santo Domingo and the eastern region, as well as other parts of the country.
Much more than a property showcase
Banco BHD explained that the purpose of the fair is to connect the diaspora with property-purchase opportunities in the Dominican Republic while also offering guidance, education and financial support to people considering such a decision.
For that reason, the IV New York City Real Estate Fair will not be merely a project exhibition. Specialists from the bank will be available to explain financing options, the factors that should be considered before taking on a financial commitment and the requirements for obtaining a home loan.
Freddy Simó, vice president of Specialized Sales at Banco BHD, emphasized the importance of giving interested buyers direct guidance before they make a decision.
“We want people to have the opportunity to speak with our specialists, clear up their questions and understand which decision best fits their financial reality and stage of life,” Simó said.
The fair will also offer financial education capsules and talks, with information about financing, planning and other important elements that should be evaluated before making a real estate investment.
Simó explained that people also have different motivations for buying. Some Dominicans want to secure a home in anticipation of eventually returning to the country; others want to improve living conditions for their parents or relatives, while a third group is looking for a second home for vacations or a property that can become an investment through rental income.
Lucy Astwood, second vice president of Indirect Business at Banco BHD’s Mortgage Banking division, invited Dominicans and Latinos from New York and the entire tri-state area to attend, highlighting the opportunity to learn about different projects and receive advice on which alternatives may best fit their means.
Inés Peguero, Banco BHD’s second vice president of Legal Affairs, emphasized the importance of bringing this type of initiative to New York, home to a large Dominican community with strong family and economic ties to the Dominican Republic.
Dominicans prepare to attend
The interest generated by the fair can also be seen in the expectations of Dominicans considering the possibility of buying a home in their country. The following illustrative testimonials reflect some of the reasons that may motivate potential attendees:
“I have worked in New York for many years and want to begin building assets in my country. I am going to the fair to learn about projects and find out which financing option might fit my means.”
“My dream is to buy a home in the Dominican Republic with my future and the day I decide to return in mind. I want to compare different projects and get good guidance before making such an important decision.”
“I am looking for a property I can use when I travel to the Dominican Republic and that can also represent an investment. I want to speak with the specialists, learn the requirements and determine what I can responsibly afford.”
These expectations match the different reasons for buying property cited by Banco BHD representatives: building assets, helping family, preparing for a possible return to the country or making an investment.
The IV New York City Real Estate Fair, sponsored by Banco BHD, is thus positioned as a meeting point for the diaspora, construction and real estate companies and financial specialists.
For Dominicans living in the United States, purchasing property in the Dominican Republic can mean much more than buying a home. It can represent assets, family security, an investment and keeping the door open to returning to their homeland one day.
That is one of the main messages of this fourth edition: finding the home of your dreams matters, but knowing how to finance it, understanding the commitment involved and making a responsible decision may matter even more.
