NEW YORK — The family of Darrel Anthony Rodríguez, a 26-year-old Dominican man fatally shot Saturday at a Manhattan subway station, is calling for the suspect’s arrest and demanding that the crime not go unpunished. Rodríguez was shot in the chest after an argument on the platform at Seventh Avenue and 53rd Street. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The young man grew up in University Heights, where relatives and friends remember him fondly. His father owns a barbershop in the neighborhood. “He was a good kid. We don’t understand why they did this to him,” a childhood friend said through tears.

His twin brother, Derick Rodríguez, a service member based in Texas, described his grief to The New York Times: “It’s like a black hole in my heart. He’s my other half.”
The New York Police Department is searching for a man captured on surveillance video wearing a red hood and a black face covering. Police warned that he is armed and dangerous. According to authorities, the shooting happened shortly after noon and sent many riders scrambling to leave the platform.
Rodríguez’s death brings the number of homicides on New York City public transportation to seven in 2026, compared with four during all of 2025. As the search for the suspect continues, the young man’s loved ones are urging authorities to determine what happened and bring the person responsible to justice.
