Santo Domingo, DR.- President Luis Abinader said Sunday that he will not use his new position at the head of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) to impose a successor for the party’s presidential nomination ahead of the 2028 elections.
Abinader made the statement after being proclaimed president of the organization for the 2026–2030 period, during the closing of the ruling party’s 24th Ordinary National Convention.

“I am not here to build a candidacy or impose a political heir,” said the president, who maintained that his responsibility will be to preserve an institutional, democratic, impartial and united organization during the process of selecting the next presidential hopeful.
The head of state acknowledged that legitimate aspirations exist within the PRM and that there will be competition among those seeking the nomination. However, he warned that those differences must not become a cause of internal division.
According to Abinader, PRM members will choose the nominee through the democratic mechanisms established by the organization. Afterward, he said, it will be up to the citizens of the Dominican Republic to make the final decision at the polls.
In his first speech as PRM president, Abinader also expressed confidence that the organization will win the 2028 elections and said the party will achieve more electoral victories in the future.
The president called on the organization’s leaders to view politics as an exercise in service and to maintain respect for those who hold different positions. He also said that citizens’ trust depends on conduct, results and example.
Abinader additionally acknowledged challenges related to the cost of living, security, services and opportunities for young people, issues he mentioned during his address to party members.
During the convention, Juan Garrigó Mejía assumed the position of PRM secretary general and proposed strengthening integration among the political organization, the government and citizens. Deligne Ascención, meanwhile, was sworn in as executive vice president.
Ascención said one of the main responsibilities of the new authorities will be to preserve internal cohesion. “We can never take that unity for granted,” he said, arguing that individual aspirations must not be placed above the party and its commitment to the country.
The proclamation formalizes Luis Abinader’s leadership at the head of the PRM after his election was approved through a unity slate without opposition. The new leadership will be responsible for organizing the party over the next four years.
