Santiago, Chile.— A Dominican man extradited to Chile from the Dominican Republic was formally charged with aggravated murder and illegal possession of a firearm in connection with the 2025 killing of a 25-year-old Venezuelan.
The defendant is accused of committing the crime on July 18, 2025, near La Vega Central market in the Recoleta municipality.

According to evidence presented by prosecutor Eduardo Pontigo of the Organized Crime and Homicide Team (ECOH), the attack occurred at the intersection of Antonia López de Bello and Salas Street.
The Prosecutor’s Office alleges that the accused approached the victim and shot him in the head. When the young man was on the ground, he allegedly fired two more shots, killing him at the scene.
The investigation established that the victim was accompanied by his partner, a Dominican woman. Authorities believe the attack was carried out by the woman’s former partner.
After the homicide, the defendant allegedly fled in a vehicle and later left Chile in August 2025 through an unauthorized border crossing. He subsequently traveled to the Dominican Republic on a flight from Lima, Peru.
The accused was arrested in the Dominican Republic in February as a result of coordinated work by Chile’s Carabineros, Interpol and Dominican authorities. The process concluded Wednesday with his handover to Interpol Chile officers.
The Dominican man had been formally charged in absentia on November 20, 2025, when the court ordered pretrial detention. That decision allowed authorities to begin the formal process to secure his extradition.
After arriving in Chile, the defendant appeared Wednesday before the relevant Guarantee Court. The court again ordered pretrial detention, ruling that his release would pose a danger to public safety and that he presented a flight risk.
The court set a 60-day deadline to complete the investigation into the Dominican man extradited to Chile.
