SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic.- Agents from the National Drug Control Agency, known as the DNCD, together with members of the Public Ministry, seized 42 packages of a substance presumed to be cocaine during an operation at the Multimodal Port of Caucedo in Boca Chica.

The operation was supported by the port’s Military Security unit and began after intelligence reports warned of suspicious movements by several people near a block of refrigerated containers destined for export.

According to the DNCD, the people at the site tried to escape when they noticed the authorities. One man, identified by the agency as a port employee, was arrested while the search for the other people involved continues.

During an initial inspection, agents found a black bag containing nine packages. They also found another empty bag and tools that authorities believe were allegedly used to remove the metal covers from the cooling systems of the cargo units.

The teams later expanded the inspection and discovered 33 additional packages hidden inside the refrigeration system of a container loaded with medical products.

According to the cargo manifest cited by the DNCD, the container’s final destination was France. Authorities are investigating the discovery as part of an alleged international drug-trafficking operation bound for Europe.

The detainee remains in the custody of the Public Ministry for the corresponding procedures. So far, authorities have not reported any other arrests connected to the case.

The DNCD said the investigation remains open to identify and locate other people who may be linked to the suspected cocaine found at Caucedo.

The 42 packages were sent under chain of custody to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences, known as INACIF, which will determine the type and exact weight of the seized substance through laboratory analysis.
